For the love of Instagram

From the minute I installed the Instagram  App on my iPhone, I was in love. I mean I always have some sort of a camera with me at all times, but now I could ditch the point and shoot when I wanted and just have my phone.

What is it that I love about Instagram? It just fits so nicely into everyday life. I like to document everything and anything that peaks my interest. The green juice I just made- snap! The stack of wood I just walked by- snap! Just like that, I have captured that tiny part of my day in my digital memory keeper. And while someone looking at my feed may think “oh that is a pretty cupcake”, I will remember that pink lemonade cupcake was from a weekend spent with fellow photographers as we discussed our 2013 goals. Each square tile will jog my memory and allow me to hold on to details in my life that I could easily have slipped through the cracks. We all remember the big occasions, but sometimes those small things really add up to be the stuff that makes us smile, the bits of happiness that get us through the day. So whether or not you have Instagram,  remember to take pictures of everything. I mean it. Everything. Your slippers. Your kids in a waiting room. Your dinner. You will be happy that you did. It will make you recognize the beauty in your everyday life.

Below is just a tiny taste of my Instagram feed. If you want to see more of my everyday inspiration, you can find me there at jennstarrkelly. And I would love to see tidbits of your life, too. Comment below with your account name so I can follow you !

Stay tuned for a future blog post where I will share my Instagram printed books- the next important thing for you to do so you can have those digital memories live in the real world.

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Friday Favorite :: The Family Shot

Everyone is in search of the proverbial “perfect family photo”. To me, the perfect shot may not be how others envision it. I don’t need all eyes on the camera, or all perfect smiles. What draws me in, is the emotion and the over all feeling of the shot. Don’t get me wrong-  I do capture photographs where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling, but it is the in between shots that really steal my heart. The image below of the lovely Lamberto family, illustrates the kind of family photo I strive to capture.

Have a happy Friday everyone!

Newtown PA Family Photographer :: Saturday at Home

This particular family session had to be rescheduled a few times due to sickness and schedules. When everyone was healthy I thought we would be in the clear. And then the snow came. I thought for sure we would be snowed in and have to postpone again. Thankfully, Mother Nature gave us some pretty snow, but not enough for us to have to reschedule.

We took advantage of the lovely indoor light and I grabbed some cozy photos inside. Over the years I have learned to embrace the beauty of photographing families in their own space. I love documenting children in their rooms, it is a place where they are comfortable to be themselves and they forget about the camera for a while.

After the indoor fun, we braved the cold just for a few shots. We couldn’t pass up all the beautiful new fallen snow! The backyard was so open and clear. There is something very inviting about a shiny white blanket of snow as far as the eye can see.

Friday Favorite :: Mother & Son Moment

It’s Friday Favorite time! Today I am sharing a photo of a lovely moment between mother and child. I shot this a few years back and have always loved it. You can almost feel the warmth in her gaze as she looks at her son. These are the kinds of images I am privileged to capture. These are fleeting moments, that one day, we will want to remember. If my photos can evoke emotions, or bring you back to those times that are pictured, then I am doing something right. And I really hope that I am.

Have a great Friday everyone and hope you have some quality family time this weekend!

Princeton Family Photographer :: The Wozniak Family

Today I am sharing a lovely fall session that was taken on Princeton University Campus and the surrounding areas. One of the wonderful things that Princeton has to offer is variety. There are so many little nooks and amazing areas to discover in this scenic college town. You want great architecture? You got! You want lush greenery? It has that, too! You want an ivy covered stone wall? Look no further! I think you get what I mean. It makes photographing sessions there a no brainer. Chances are there is something for everyone.

I have been photographing the Wozniak Family for a few years now. Their beautiful girls are naturals in front of the camera. And I don’t mean that is the “smile for the camera” kind of way. I mean that when we have a session together they are comfortable enough to chat with me, and go about their day while I document it. It is something I strive for. My lifestyle sessions will always involve a certain amount of posing. Setting up the family for their portrait, or having the children sit with me so I can talk to them and get them comfortable. But it is after all that “planned positioning”, that I am able to get the natural reactions and genuine emotion from the families I photograph. I think the combination of that, mixed with the documentary style way I shoot the remainder of the session makes for a happy balance.

These are a few of my favorites from that afternoon. Hopefully the bright colors and warm smiles take some of the chill away from this winter day.
